When the children of Caroline Elementary School went outdoors for recess on a warm September morning this year (1998), to their great surprise, they discovered that a great horned owl had entwined itself in one of the soccer nets. Mrs. Clark and Ms. Rose came to the call. After a long, careful struggle, they freed the owl from most of the netting. They then kept the owl wrapped in a jacket until help arrived.

Even though the owl was not particularly happy about the whole incident, with experienced handling, it calmed down and appeared attentive for the camera.  Everyone was thankful for the arrival of two men from the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation. The owl was taken to the Cornell Veterinary School and then to an owl barn for recuperation and healing. Reports are that it is ready to be sent back into its home environment.
